Things to do in Kangaroo Island

Sea lions firstThen the birds of prey, and the island's food and drink.

Walk among the sea lions at Seal Bay, watch the birds of prey fly, then eat and drink your way round. At Seal Bay a Parks officer leads you along the beach through a colony of around 800 endangered Australian sea lions. Raptor Domain runs the only free-flight birds of prey presentation in South Australia. The rest is the island's produce: island cider, a honey soft drink, wine at False Cape, and lunch at the Emu Ridge distillery. A day from Adelaide with the ferry and Seal Bay included is from $399, children $133, or from $195 for the food and wine day.

Kangaroo Island is a 45 minute ferry from Cape Jervis, south of Adelaide, and about 150km long. What there is to do falls into two halves: the wildlife, which is the reason most people go, and the food and drink, which is the reason they talk about it afterwards.

The wildlife

  • Seal Bay.A guided walk on the beach among around 800 endangered Australian sea lions, led by a Parks officer. On the three day trip it is a 45 minute tour with National Parks guides. This is the one people remember.
  • Raptor Domain. The only free-flight birds of prey presentation in South Australia, on the food and wine day.
  • Kangaroos, koalas and echidnasin the wild, in numbers the mainland does not have, because the island has no foxes or rabbits.
  • Flinders Chase and Remarkable Rocksat the west end: granite boulders worn into shapes on a clifftop above the Southern Ocean.

The food and drink

  • Emu Ridge distilleryfor a two course lunch on the food and wine day.
  • Island cider and a honey soft drinktasted through the day.
  • A structured wine tasting at False Cape.
  • Lunch at the Vivonne Bay Bistroon the south coast, two courses, main and dessert, on the Seal Bay day.
  • A platter of local produce at the Kangaroo Island Breweryand an Aussie barbecue in the Old Shearing Shed, on the two day trip.
  • A picnic lunch at the honey farmon the first day of the three day trip.

A night on the island

  • Swags under the starsat a private property with its own access to Antechamber Bay, two nights, on the three day trip. Camping or dorm beds at Pelican Lagoon Lodge are the other option.
  • A glamping tent or a swag at Eleanor Downs Farmone night, on the two day trip.
  • Both are small groups, capped at 20.
