Kangaroo Island itinerary — 1, 2 or 3 days
One day covers Seal Bay and the headline sights, ferry included, from $195. Two days gets you a night on the island so you are not watching the clock for the last ferry. Three days reaches the far west and Flinders Chase, which is where the island stops feeling like a day trip.
Checked on 6 October 2026.
Kangaroo Island is 150km long, which is the thing the maps hide. A day trip from Adelaide works because the ferry and the driving are handled, but the island rewards a second day more than almost anywhere else we sell.
1 day — Seal Bay and the headlines
What the day holds
- Hotel pick-up in Adelaide and the coach south to Cape Jervis.
- The ferry across, 45 minutes, included both ways.
- Seal Bay — a ranger-guided walk along the beach among a colony of endangered Australian sea lions. This is the one people remember.
- The island's main sights, then the ferry back and into Adelaide late. About 16 hours door to door.
2 days — a night on the island
Day by day
- Day 1 — the early ferry across, Seal Bay and the south coast, then a night on the island rather than racing the last boat.
- Day 2 — the rest of the island at a pace that is not dictated by a ferry timetable, and back to Adelaide in the evening.
The camping version sleeps in a glamping tent or a swag at Eleanor Downs Farm, in a group capped at 20 and a 4WD rather than a coach.
3 days — the far west
What the third day buys
- Flinders Chase National Park and the west end of the island, which a day trip never reaches.
- Two nights at a private property with its own access to Antechamber Bay.
- Time in the water and on the beaches rather than in a vehicle between them.
- Around 800 sea lions at Seal Bay on a 45-minute National Parks tour rather than a quick stop.

Which to pick
- One day if Adelaide is your base and the island is an excursion — Seal Bay alone justifies it.
- Two days if you would rather not spend four hours of the trip on a coach and a ferry.
- Three days if wildlife is the reason you are going. The west end is where it is densest and quietest.
- Already on the island? Both day trips can start at Penneshaw instead, which takes the travel out entirely.
