Is Kangaroo Island worth visiting?

Yes, and Seal Bay alone justifies it. A Parks officer walks you along the beach among a colony of endangered Australian sea lions — around 800 of them — close enough that you keep being told to step back. From $195, ferry included.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

Kangaroo Island is an hour's ferry off the South Australian coast and 150km long, which is bigger than most people expect. A third of it is conservation land, and the wildlife is the reason to go — not as a show, but because the animals are simply there.

Why it is worth going

  • Seal Bay.A ranger-guided walk on the beach among around 800 endangered Australian sea lions. There is no fence and no feeding — you are walking through a colony.
  • Flinders Chase and Remarkable Rocksat the west end — granite boulders worn into shapes on a clifftop above the Southern Ocean.
  • Wildlife everywhere.Kangaroos, koalas, echidnas and birds, in numbers the mainland does not have because there are no foxes or rabbits.
  • The food.Honey, oysters, cheese and gin, mostly made within a few kilometres of each other.
  • It is quiet.Even in season it is nothing like the east coast.

The honest version

  • The day trip is about 16 hoursfrom Adelaide and back. That is the price of an island two hours from the mainland, and the ferry is included both ways.
  • Two days is better. You stop racing the last ferry and the island opens up.
  • Three days reaches the far westwhich the day trips never do.
  • Bushfires went through in 2020and parts of the west are still regenerating. It is visible, and it is also worth seeing.
  • Already on the island? Both day trips can start at Penneshaw instead, which takes the travel out entirely.
