Can you do Kangaroo Island in a day, and what do you see?
Yes, and it is a brilliant day. A day trip from Adelaide includes the ferry both ways and reaches Seal Bay, where a Parks officer walks you along the beach among wild Australian sea lions. It is a long day — about 16 hours door to door — and the island is the reason it is worth it.
Checked on 5 October 2026.
Kangaroo Island sits an hour's ferry off the South Australian coast and has more wildlife per square kilometre than almost anywhere else in the country. The day trip works because the hard part — getting there — is handled for you.

What the day actually looks like
- The ferry is included both ways — nothing to book, queue for or pay separately at Cape Jervis.
- Hotel pick-up and drop-off in Adelaide are included, so no car and no early drive to the terminal.
- Seal Bay is the one people remember. A ranger-guided walk along the beach among a colony of endangered Australian sea lions, close enough that you keep being told to step back.
- It is about 16 hours from Adelaide and back. Long, but the island is two hours from the mainland and that is simply what it takes.
If you are already on the island
Both day trips can start on Kangaroo Island itself — at Penneshaw, where the ferry lands — if you have made your own way across or are staying a few nights. That takes the ferry time out of the day entirely.
Or give it two or three days
A day is enough to see the island. Two or three is enough to feel like you have been there, and it is where the camping trips come in — small groups, a swag or a glamping tent, and sunsets without a coach park.
| Trip | Length | Where you sleep | Group | From |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Day Kangaroo Island + Barossa Valley | 2 days, you arrange your own night between them | Non Applicable | 2 to 48 | $465 |
| 2 Day Kangaroo Island Camping Adventure | 2 days, 1 night | Glamping | Max 20 | $869 |
| 3 Day Kangaroo Island Camping Adventure | 3 days, 2 nights | Camping | Max 20 | $885 |
Which one?
- One day, want the wildlife — the Kangaroo Island Experience. Seal Bay, the ferry and the transfers, all in.
- One day, want the gentler version — the food and wine day, rated easiest for walking and built around producers rather than clifftops.
- Two days, small group — the camping adventure. Maximum 20, a 4WD rather than a coach, and a night on a farm.
- Three days — the same again with the far west of the island, Flinders Chase and time that is not spent travelling.
