Which Kakadu tour should I do from Darwin — one day, two or three?

Three days is the one most people are glad they booked. A day trip reaches Kakadu and back but it is a long drive for it. Two days adds a night and the wetlands cruise. Three days gets you to the gorges and the rock art without rushing, and it is the shortest trip that really does the park justice.

Checked on 5 October 2026.

Kakadu is about half the size of Switzerland, which is the whole problem and the whole appeal. How long you give it decides how much of it you see, so here is what each length actually reaches.

What each length gets you

One day

  • The quickest way to say you have been. Transfers from your Darwin accommodation are included and you are back the same evening.
  • It is a long day on the road — worth knowing going in, and the guide makes the drive part of the trip.
  • Litchfield is the better one-day option if waterfalls and swimming holes are what you are after: it is closer, so more of the day is spent out of the bus.

Two days

  • Adds a night in the park and the wetlands cruise by boat, which is where the crocodiles and the birdlife are.
  • You sleep in bush camping tents, with the guide cooking at camp.

Three days — the sweet spot

  • The gorges and the rock art both fit, which is the difference between seeing Kakadu and driving through it.
  • Choose your comfort: a 4WD Troopy in a group of 9 to 16 for the most remote version, a safari-tent trip, or one that adds Litchfield's waterfalls on the way back.
  • Around 1,070km across the three days on the Litchfield version — big country, and the driving is a lot of the pleasure.

If you have five days

Five days reaches the places the shorter trips cannot — Koolpin Gorge, Katherine Gorge, and Arnhem Land with an Aboriginal-owned permit.
