What are the best day trips from Hobart, and can you do them without a car?

You do not need a car. Ten day trips run out of Hobart and come back to it, and every one picks you up from your hotel or hostel. The island trips include the ferry both ways, so Bruny Island and Maria Island are both comfortable day trips — and so, from Hobart, is Cradle Mountain. An eleventh runs one way to Launceston if you are moving on.

Checked on 5 October 2026.

Hobart is a brilliant base. Nearly everything people come to Tasmania for is within a day's reach of it, and because the trips collect you from where you are sleeping, hiring a car is optional rather than necessary.

Prices are per person and update on their own. A twelfth day trip, Cradle Mountain, runs from Launceston instead if you are starting up north.

Bruny Island — yes, you can see it in a day

  • The ferry is included both ways, so there is nothing to book, queue for or pay separately.
  • Pick-up is from Hobart hotels and hostels from around 6:50am, which is what makes a full day on the island possible.
  • Small group, maximum 20, in a 4WD mini bus with a guide — you are not following a flag around.
  • There is also a food and wine version at a gentler 7:45am start if you would rather taste your way round than walk it.

Port Arthur — three ways to do it

  • The straight trip takes in the Historic Site and the Tasman Peninsula, in a small group of up to 20.
  • With a lavender farm if you want the softer version of the day.
  • With a Tasmanian devil sanctuary, which is the one to pick if you are travelling with kids or simply want to see one.
  • All three include transfers from your Hobart accommodation.

Cradle Mountain in a day from Hobart

  • It is a long and beautiful day — a 6am start and an executive 11-seat bus with reclining seats and phone charging for the drive.
  • Maximum of 10 people, so it is one of the smallest groups we sell anywhere.
  • If you are starting in Launceston instead, the same mountain is a much shorter run and costs less — the trips table above notes it.

If you have more than a day

Two and three day trips loop several of these together and save you doubling back, which is usually better value than stacking day trips.
