Uluru trips for solo travellers, families and older visitors

Most people on these trips are travelling alone, so arriving solo is the normal way to do it rather than the awkward one. Groups cap at 20 to 24, every trip carries an effort rating, and if camping is the sticking point the Safari range has permanent tents with twin beds.

Three versions of the same worry turn up in our inbox constantly: will I be the only one on my own, will my kids cope, and is it too much walking. Here are the actual answers.

Travelling on your own

  • You will not be the odd one out. Solo travellers are the majority on these trips — the small-group outback runs are where people go precisely because they are travelling alone.
  • No single supplement on the camping trips, because everyone is in a swag or a shared tent. That is a real saving over a hotel-based trip.
  • Three days together does the work. Shared campfire, shared cooking, the same sunrise — people swap plans by the second night.
  • Groups cap at 20 to 24, so it is a van of people rather than a coach of strangers.

With children

  • The camping trips work from around school age — the walking is optional, the swag is an adventure, and the drives are long but broken up.
  • Tell us their ages when you book. Some operators have minimums and some have child rates; we will check against the trip rather than guess.
  • The shorter trips are the easier sell. Two days covers Uluru and Kata Tjuta without three long driving days.
  • A real bed helps enormously on a family trip — the Safari range below has twin beds and powered camps.

At a gentler pace

Every trip carries a physical rating from 1 to 5, set by the operator. The Uluru trips sit at 3, which means a long flat walk you can opt out of, not a climb. What varies more is where you sleep.

The Safari trips use permanent or furnished tents with beds. Prices update on their own.

  • The base walk is 10km and flat, and nobody minds if you do a section and wait with the guide.
  • Kings Canyon has a rim walk and a creek walk — the creek walk is the gentle one and it is still beautiful.
  • Powered camps with hot showers and flushing toilets on the Safari range, with power points for charging.
  • Say what you are comfortable with when you book. We would far rather put you on the right trip than any trip.

A good place to start
