Is Uluru worth visiting, and why do people go?
Yes, and not for the reason most people expect. Uluru is not a photo stop — it is 9.4km around, 348 metres high, and the thing that gets people is standing underneath it at sunrise while it changes colour. You can be there for $679 and three days covers it properly.

It is a fair question. Uluru is a long way from anywhere, the trip costs real money, and from photographs it is a big red rock in a flat desert. Here is what people who go actually say they got out of it.
Why people go
- Scale does not photograph. It is 348 metres high and 9.4km around the base. Photographs flatten it; standing at the bottom does not.
- The colour genuinely changes. Sunrise and sunset are not a tourist ritual for nothing — the rock goes through oranges and reds you will not believe until you watch it happen.
- It is a living cultural site, not a monument. The Anangu are the traditional owners, and the walks take you past rock art and waterholes with stories attached that are still told.
- Kata Tjuta is the surprise. Thirty-six domes a short drive away, bigger than Uluru, and the Valley of the Winds walk between them is the one people say they did not expect.
- The sky. You are hundreds of kilometres from a streetlight, sleeping outside. Most people have never seen stars like it.
What you actually do
- The base walk — 10km right around the rock, flat, done at sunrise while it is cool.
- Sunrise and sunset viewing from the proper vantage points, which the trips time for you.
- Kata Tjuta — the Valley of the Winds or Walpa Gorge.
- Kings Canyon on the three-day trips and longer: a rim walk above a 100-metre sandstone gorge that most people rate above Uluru itself.
- The Cultural Centre, which is where the question of what the place means stops being abstract.

The honest version
- One day is not enough and nobody sells it that way from Alice. Two days is the minimum and three is where it stops feeling rushed.
- You cannot climb it. The climb closed permanently in 2019 at the request of the traditional owners. The base walk is better anyway and everyone who does it says so.
- It is hot in summer and cold at night in winter — both are manageable and both are covered on our month by month page.
- Go for the country, not the rock alone. The people who come back disappointed are the ones who flew in for a photograph. The ones who camp two nights do not.
