Uluru itinerary — what fits in 2, 3, 4 and 5 days

Three days is the one to book. Two days covers Uluru and Kata Tjuta. Three adds Kings Canyon, which is the walk most people rate above the rock itself. Four and five add the West MacDonnell Ranges on the Alice Springs side. From $679.

Checked on 5 October 2026.

The Red Centre has three things worth the drive and they are hours apart: Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon. How many days you give it decides how many of the three you get, so here is each length as it actually runs.

2 days — Uluru and Kata Tjuta

Day by day

  • Day 1 — join at Yulara or Ayers Rock early afternoon. Kata Tjuta and the walk between the domes, then Uluru at sunset.
  • Day 2 — up before dawn for sunrise at Uluru, then the base walk while the morning is still cool. Finish around midday.

Two days is the right answer if you are flying in and out of Ayers Rock and the rock itself is the point.

3 days — the one that adds Kings Canyon

Day by day

  • Day 1 — depart Alice Springs at 5:30am, or join at Ayers Rock between 1pm and 2pm. Kata Tjuta, then Uluru at sunset.
  • Day 2 — sunrise at Uluru and the 10km base walk, then across to Kings Canyon, camping near the gorge.
  • Day 3 — the Kings Canyon rim walk at first light, then back to Alice Springs by about 6pm.

This is what most people book and what most people are glad they booked. The step up from two days to three is usually around $60.

4 and 5 days — adding the West MacDonnells

What the extra days buy

  • The West MacDonnell Ranges west of Alice Springs — gorges, waterholes and swimming, and almost nobody there.
  • More time at each stop rather than a new stop: a second walk at Kata Tjuta, an afternoon at the Cultural Centre.
  • A slower pace, which in a place this hot is worth more than it sounds.

Planning around it

  • Flying into Alice Springs? Departures are at 5:30am, so you need the night before in town.
  • Flying into Ayers Rock? Pick-up is between 1pm and 2pm, so be on the ground by about 1pm.
  • Finishing where you started? Several trips run one way, Alice to Yulara or back, so you can fly out of the other end.
  • Best months are April, May, September and October — the month by month page has the figures.
