Warm, dry and a few degrees cooler than Adelaide. Kingscote averages 25 to 27°C by day from December to February, against 27 to 30°C in Adelaide, and January is the island's driest month, with 15mm of rain. Nights fall to 11 to 14°C, which is what makes a summer night in a swag or a glamping tent so good. The sea lions at Seal Bay are resident all year, so the beach walk among around 800 endangered Australian sea lions with a Parks officer is there whenever you come. A day from Adelaide with the ferry, Seal Bay and lunch included is from $399, or two days with a night glamping on a farm from $869.

Summer is when Kangaroo Island is at its sunniest. It sits in the Southern Ocean, so it stays a few degrees cooler than Adelaide by day, and from December to February it gets less rain than any other part of its year. Long, dry days for the beaches and the wildlife, and cool nights for sleeping out.

What summer on the island gives you
- Seal Bay.A guided walk on the beach among around 800 endangered Australian sea lions, led by a Parks officer. The colony is resident, not migratory, so it runs in every month.
- A break from the heat.January averages 27°C on the island and 30°C in Adelaide, so the ferry takes you somewhere cooler.
- Dry days.December to February are the island's three driest months, between 15 and 19mm of rain each.
- Nights for sleeping out.11 to 14°C after dark, for a swag at Antechamber Bay or a glamping tent at Eleanor Downs Farm.
- Kangaroos, koalas and echidnasin the wild, in numbers the mainland does not have, because the island has no foxes or rabbits.
- Flinders Chase and Remarkable Rocksat the west end, granite boulders on a clifftop above the Southern Ocean, on the trip that gives the far west proper time.
