Is Kings Canyon worth it, and which trips go there?
It is the reason to book three days at Uluru instead of two. The rim walk climbs to the top of a 100-metre sandstone gorge and most people rate it above the rock itself. Ten trips include it, from $729, and none of them are day trips — it is 300km from Uluru.

Kings Canyon sits in Watarrka National Park, between Uluru and Alice Springs and a long way from both. Almost nobody arrives having planned to see it, and a surprising number leave saying it was the best day.
Why it's worth it
- The rim walk.You climb up and walk the top edge of the gorge, with sheer walls dropping away beside you. It takes three to four hours and is done at first light.
- The Garden of Edena permanent waterhole in the middle of the canyon, surrounded by cycads, in the driest part of the continent.
- It is a completely different landscape from Uluru.The rock is a single monolith; the canyon is layered sandstone cut by water.
- There is a creek walk tooalong the bottom, if the climb is not for you. It is shorter, flatter and still beautiful.

Can you do it in a day?
- Not from Uluru or Alice Springsit is around 300km from each, and nobody sells it as a day trip.
- Three days from Alice Springsis the shortest trip that includes it, and that is exactly why three beats two.
- The step up from two days to three is usually about $60which is the best value decision in the whole Red Centre.
Worth knowing
- The rim walk starts before dawnin the warmer months, because the climb at the start is steep and the heat builds fast.
- It closes above 36°Cunder Northern Territory parks rules, so in summer the early start is not optional.
- Kings Creek Stationis where several trips camp, and it is a working cattle station rather than a resort.
