What is there to do on K'gari?

Lakes, beach and rainforestFreshwater lakes, a beach that is a highway, and rainforest growing out of sand.

Swim in the freshwater lakes, ride the beach and walk in rainforest that grows out of sand. The headline is Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie), a perched lake of clear water between 22 and 27°C ringed by white silica sand. Then 75 Mile Beach, the beach that is also the island's highway, Eli Creek to float down to the sea, the Maheno shipwreck, on the beach since 1935, and the coloured sands of the Pinnacles. The longer trips reach the north, where the Champagne Pools are the island's safe saltwater swim and Indian Head looks down on rays, sharks and turtles. A day reaches Lake McKenzie from $299 with the ferry included, and you can drive a 4WD yourself in a guided convoy, from $525 for three days.

Checked on 28 October 2026.

K'gari is the largest sand island in the world, 120km of it, World Heritage listed and with no sealed roads. Everything you do there is on sand: swimming in lakes the rain has filled, driving the beach at low tide, and walking under tall forest that has grown straight out of the dunes.

Swim

  • Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie).A perched freshwater lake, rain held above the water table on compacted sand, with white silica sand and water clear enough to see your feet in. It sits between 22 and 27°C, and some trips have lunch beside it.
  • Lake Birrabeenanother freshwater lake ringed by white sand, on the three day convoy trip out of Hervey Bay.
  • Eli Creekwhere you float down a clear freshwater creek to the sea.
  • The Champagne Poolsrock pools on the ocean side where the surf washes in. They are the island's safe saltwater swim; the open beach is for driving and looking at, with the lakes for swimming.

Ride the beach

  • 75 Mile Beachis a gazetted highway, driven at the tide, with aircraft landing on it.
  • The Maheno shipwreckhalf-buried on the beach since 1935.
  • The Pinnaclesthe coloured sand cliffs further north along the beach.
  • Indian Headthe headland in the north you climb to look down on rays, sharks and turtles in the water below.

And the rest

  • Rainforest growing on sandtall subtropical forest out of the dunes, and the reason for the World Heritage listing.
  • Drive a 4WD yourself. On the convoy trips you take the wheel of a Toyota 4WD behind a guide in the lead vehicle, after a full safety briefing.
  • The crossing, a 30 minute cruise across the Great Sandy Marine Park from River Heads, or the barge from Inskip Point.
  • Dingoes: they are wild, and your guide briefs you on keeping with the group.
  • A night on the island, in a beach house, a bell tent at an exclusive camp, a camp with hot showers, or the resorts at Eurong Beach and Kingfisher Bay.
