Is K'gari (Fraser Island) worth visiting?
Yes, and it is unlike anywhere else. The largest sand island in the world, with rainforest growing straight out of sand, perched freshwater lakes you can see your feet through, and a beach that doubles as the highway. From $299 with the ferry included.

K'gari is 120km of sand with no sealed roads, and that single fact shapes everything about a visit. It is World Heritage listed, it is the only place on earth where tall rainforest grows on sand dunes, and you cannot get around it without a 4WD.
Why it's worth going
- Boorangoora, or Lake McKenzie.A perched freshwater lake — rain water held above the water table on compacted sand — with white silica sand and water clear enough to see your feet in chest-deep.
- 75 Mile Beach.The eastern beach is a gazetted highway, driven at the tide, with planes landing on it.
- Rainforest on sand.Tall subtropical forest growing out of dunes, which should not be possible and is the reason for the World Heritage listing.
- The Maheno shipwreckhalf-buried on the beach since 1935.
- The Champagne Pools and Indian Headat the north end, reached only on the longer trips.
The honest version
- One day is a lot of drivingfor Lake McKenzie and a stretch of beach. It works, and two days works much better.
- You cannot swim in the sea.The eastern beach has strong currents and sharks. Nobody minds once they have seen the lakes.
- There are dingoes and they are wild.Your guide briefs you properly; the rule is to stay with the group.
- It is a sand island, so the ride is rough by design.Say so when you book if you have back trouble.
- Camping or a resortboth exist, and the table on the itinerary page says which trip is which.
