K'gari (Fraser Island) itinerary — 1, 2 or 3 days

Two days is the one to book. A day reaches Lake McKenzie and 75 Mile Beach and spends a lot of itself driving, from $299. Two days adds the north of the island and a night where the only light is the fire. Three days reaches the Champagne Pools and Indian Head without rushing.

K'gari is the largest sand island in the world and has no sealed roads, so everything runs on a 4WD and on the tide. That is what makes the difference between one day and two bigger than it sounds — a day trip spends hours of itself getting to the famous places and back.

1 day — the headlines

What the day holds

  • The ferry across, included, from Inskip Point or River Heads.
  • Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie) — a perched freshwater lake with white silica sand and water you can see your feet through.
  • 75 Mile Beach — the beach that is also the highway, driven at the tide.
  • Rainforest growing straight out of sand, which should not be possible.
  • Pick-ups start in Noosa from about 5:25am, or from Hervey Bay you leave River Heads at 8:30am.

2 days — the one to book

Day by day

  • Day 1 — the ferry, Lake McKenzie, the rainforest and 75 Mile Beach, finishing at camp or the resort.
  • Day 2 — north along the beach to the Maheno shipwreck, the Pinnacles coloured sands, and the eastern beaches, before the ferry back.

You can sleep in a permanent bell tent at an exclusive camp, in motel-style rooms at Eurong Beach Resort, or camping — the table below says which is which.

3 days — the far north

What the third day buys

  • The Champagne Pools — natural rock pools on the ocean side where the surf washes in, and the only safe saltwater swimming on the island.
  • Indian Head, the headland you climb to look down on rays, sharks and turtles in the water below.
  • Time to swim rather than drive between swims.
  • Two nights means you are there for both sunrise and sunset on the beach.

Good to know

  • There are dingoes on K'gari and they are wild. Your guide briefs you; the rule is to stay with the group.
  • Swim in the lakes, not the sea. The eastern beach has strong currents and sharks — and once you have seen Lake McKenzie you will not mind.
  • It is a sand island, so the ride is bumpy by design. Say so when you book if you have back trouble and we will point you at the gentler vehicles.
  • Self-drive trips exist if you would rather take the wheel yourself in a convoy.
