Do you need a 4WD on K'gari (Fraser Island)?

YesAnd on K'gari it is not negotiable.

Yes, and it is the one place in Australia where that is not negotiable. K'gari is the largest sand island in the world and it has no sealed roads at all — you drive on inland sand tracks and on 75 Mile Beach itself, and the tide decides when you can move. A standard hire car is not insured to go, and most agreements say so explicitly. Three ways across: a guided 4WD bus from $299 for a day, drive an automatic 4WD yourself in a convoy behind a guide from $699 for three days, or a guided small-group 4WD.

Travellers on the bull bar of a 4WD on 75 Mile Beach

This is the question that catches people out at the hire car counter, usually the day before they meant to go. Worth knowing before you book the car rather than after.

Why a normal car cannot go

  • There is no bitumen on the island. The inland tracks are soft sand and the main road is the beach.
  • 75 Mile Beach is a gazetted roadwith a speed limit, police patrols and aircraft landing on it. It is also only drivable around low tide.
  • Standard hire agreements exclude unsealed roadsso a 2WD on the island is both stuck and uninsured.
  • You need a vehicle access permitas well as the ferry, if you are taking your own.

Where this comes from. The vehicle, the nights, the meals and the prices on each trip are that trip's own details as held on its page here, and prices update on their own. Road access, the permit requirement and 75 Mile Beach being a gazetted road follow Queensland Parks and Wildlife rules for K'gari.
