Great Barrier Reef itinerary — how to plan 3, 7, 10 or 14 days
The reef is a day out of Cairns, so the length of your trip is really about what you do on the way to it. Three days is Cairns and the reef. Fourteen days is the full run up the coast — K'gari, the Whitsundays and the reef at the end. Here is each one, day by day.
Checked on 5 October 2026.
Almost everyone planning this is really planning two trips at once: the reef, which is a single brilliant day on a boat out of Cairns, and the coast you travel to get there. These are the itineraries that actually run, with the days as they fall.
14 days — Brisbane to Cairns, the full run
The classic two weeks. Three islands, a sailing trip and the reef, finishing in Cairns.
Day by day
- Day 1 — Brisbane up to Rainbow Beach.
- Day 2 — Rainbow Beach. The Carlo Sand Blow at sunset is the one to do.
- Days 3 to 5 — K'gari (Fraser Island), three days by 4WD. 75 Mile Beach, Eli Creek, Lake McKenzie, camping two nights.
- Days 6 and 7 — north to Airlie Beach.
- Days 8 to 10 — the Whitsundays, three days sailing. Whitehaven Beach, two snorkelling stops, sleeping on the boat.
- Day 11 — a free day in Airlie Beach.
- Day 12 — on to Cairns.
- Day 13 — the Great Barrier Reef, a full day on the water.
- Day 14 — Cairns, and home.

It runs in both directions — start in Cairns and do the reef on day 2 instead.
10 days — the same run, tighter
Ten days keeps K'gari, the Whitsundays and the reef and trims the free days. It is the most popular length we sell.
| Trip | Route | Length | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 Day Brisbane to Cairns Highlights | Brisbane / Cairns | 10 days, 9 nights | $1999 |
| 10 Day Cairns to Brisbane Highlights | Cairns / Brisbane | 10 days, 9 nights | $1999 |
7 days — the three big ones
A week is enough for K'gari, the Whitsundays and the reef if you keep moving. You sleep on an overnight bus once, which saves a night and a day.
| Trip | Route | Length | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 Day Brisbane to Cairns Highlights | Brisbane / Cairns | 7 days, 6 nights | $1449 |
| 7 Day Cairns to Brisbane Highlights | Cairns / Brisbane | 7 days, 6 nights | $1449 |
3 days — Cairns and the reef
- Day 1 — arrive in Cairns, settle in, walk the Esplanade.
- Day 2 — the reef: a full day on the water with snorkelling, and an introductory dive if you want one.
- Day 3 — Cape Tribulation and the Daintree, where the rainforest meets the reef, or a second day on the water.
Three days is the right answer if the reef is a stop on a bigger Australian trip rather than the trip itself. Cairns is the base for all of it.
What to know before you pick a length
- The reef day runs from Cairns, so every itinerary ends there or starts there.
- Bus passes between towns are booked for you before you travel on the packaged runs — that is the part that is awkward to arrange yourself.
- K'gari and the Whitsundays each need their own days. They are not stops you pass through; they are 3-day and 3-day trips in their own right on the longer itineraries.
- Two weeks is comfortable, ten days is brisk, a week is a sprint — all three work, and all three run in both directions.
