Can you do K'gari (Fraser Island) in a day?
Yes — day trips run from Noosa, Rainbow Beach and Hervey Bay, ferry included. You get Lake McKenzie, the beach highway and the rainforest, in a 4WD because there are no sealed roads on the island. From $299. Two or three days is the better trip if you have them.

K'gari is the largest sand island in the world, which is why everything on it runs on a 4WD and why you cannot simply drive over in a hire car. The day trips handle the ferry, the vehicle and the permits, and get you to the two or three places that make the island famous.

What you see in a day
- Boorangoora, or Lake McKenzie — a perched freshwater lake with white silica sand and water you can see your feet through. This is the one on the postcards and it deserves it.
- 75 Mile Beach — the beach that is also the highway, driven at the tide.
- The rainforest — subtropical forest growing straight out of sand, which should not be possible.
- The ferry both ways is included, as is the pick-up: from Noosa the first collection is around 5:25am, from Hervey Bay you leave River Heads at 8:30am.
Two or three days is the better trip
A day gets you the highlights and a lot of driving. A second day gets you the north of the island, the Champagne Pools and Indian Head, and a night where the only light is the fire.

Which one?
- One day from Noosa at $299 is the cheapest way onto the island, and the earliest start.
- One day from Hervey Bay is the shorter run — you are closer to begin with.
- Two days with a bed — the Eurong Beach Resort trip sleeps in motel-style rooms rather than a tent.
- Two days in a small group — the safari trip caps at 13 and sleeps in a permanent bell tent at an exclusive camp.
- Three days is the one that reaches the far north and still leaves time to swim.
Good to know
- There are dingoes on K'gari, and they are wild. Your guide will brief you; the rule is simple and it is to stay with the group.
- Swim in the lakes, not the sea. The surf on the eastern beach has strong currents and sharks — nobody swims there, and nobody minds once they have seen Lake McKenzie.
- It is a sand island, so the ride is bumpy by design. If you have back trouble, say so when you book and we will point you at the gentler vehicles.
