Are the Whitsundays worth visiting, and how long do you need?

Yes, and two nights on a boat is the way to do it. Seventy-four islands off the Queensland coast, with Whitehaven Beach — seven kilometres of silica sand so fine it squeaks — at the middle of it. A day sail is $199; two nights sleeping at anchor is where it becomes the trip people talk about.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

The Whitsundays are a cluster of islands inside the Great Barrier Reef, reached from Airlie Beach. Almost all of them are national park and uninhabited, which is why the only real way to see them is from a boat.

Why people go

  • Whitehaven Beach. Seven kilometres of pure silica sand, white enough to hurt your eyes and cool enough to walk on at midday. It does not look real in photographs and it does not look real in person either.
  • Hill Inlet, where the tide pushes the white sand through turquoise water in patterns that change every day. The lookout above it is the shot everyone has seen.
  • Snorkelling inside the reef — fringing coral off the islands, calmer and closer than the outer reef runs from Cairns.
  • Sleeping at anchor. The boats moor in a different bay each night. No lights, no engine, and a sky most people have never seen.
  • Sailing itself — on the racing yachts you can take a turn on the winches rather than just being carried.

The honest version

  • A day trip works and gets you to Whitehaven. It is a good day and it is not the same thing as waking up anchored off an empty island.
  • Two nights is the sweet spot — one night feels short once you are on the water, and by the second morning you have stopped checking your phone.
  • You sleep on the boat, in cabins. Space is tight on the racing yachts and roomier on the smaller ones — which boat to pick goes through it.
  • Seasickness catches a few people out. The trimaran barely leans, which is the reason it exists.
  • Some boats have age limits — 18 to 35 on a couple of them. Worth checking before you fall for one.

Fitting it into a bigger trip

Airlie Beach sits roughly halfway between Brisbane and Cairns, so the Whitsundays are a natural stop on the east coast run rather than a trip of their own — the packaged runs build in two or three days of sailing.
