Hobart in winter — is it worth visiting?

Yes, quiet and cosy12°C days, less rain than October, and the food is all indoors.

Yes. Winter is Tasmania's quietest season, and Hobart is the easiest place to spend it. Hobart averages 12 to 13°C by day from June to August, with nights around 5°C, and its rain is spread through the year: every winter month gets less than October's 62mm. The best winter days out are the ones built around food and shelter: Bruny Island's food and wine day, from $259, with oysters, a main and two drinks at Adventure Bay included, and the Tahune Airwalk and Hastings Caves, from $199, children $150. Cradle Mountain, where winter brings snow on the tops, is a day trip from $260. All of them leave from Hobart, most with pick-up from your accommodation.

Checked on 29 October 2026.

Hobart is a small harbour city, and most of what makes it good does not mind the cold: Salamanca and the waterfront, MONA, and the island's food and wine. Winter is the quietest time of year in Tasmania, so you get the city and the days out without the summer crowds, and the warm bus does the work between the stops.

Bruny Island: the winter day we would take

The food and wine day is made for a cold one. It starts at 7:45am from Hobart CBD hotels or Franklin Wharf, the ferry is included both ways, and lunch at Adventure Bay is in the price: oysters, a main and two drinks, with tastings through the day of cheese and beer, fudge, chocolate and honey ice cream. You are indoors and eating whenever a grey afternoon would otherwise drag. There is more on that day on our Bruny Island in winter page.

In Hobart itself

  • Salamanca Market on Saturdaysthe one thing in Hobart you do not need a trip for.
  • MONAwhich with the city and the waterfront makes a full first day.
  • Mount Wellingtonfor the view over the whole south of the island.
  • The waterfront and Salamanca are a short walk from the city centreso a cold evening out is never far from a warm room.

Or follow the coast for milder days

The east coast runs a couple of degrees warmer. Bicheno, on the edge of Freycinet, averages 14°C by day in July against 12°C in Hobart, and Wineglass Bay is a day trip from Hobart from $159, by Orford and Swansea, with the lookout a 45 minute walk uphill. For a few days without driving, the 5 Day Tasmania Tour leaves Hobart from $939 with nights in Strahan, Launceston and Bicheno. More on fitting it all in is on our how many days in Hobart page.
