How many days do you need in Hobart?
Three days is the sweet spot. Two gets you the city and one big day out. Three gets you Bruny Island, Port Arthur and Hobart itself — the south done properly. Five or more and you are using Hobart as a base for the whole island, which it does better than anywhere else in Australia.

Hobart is small — you can walk most of it — but it is also the best base in Australia for day trips, because so much of Tasmania is within a few hours. So the question is less about the city than about how many of those days out you want.
What fits in each length
Two days
- Day 1 — the city: Salamanca, the waterfront, Mount Wellington for the view over the whole south.
- Day 2 — one big day out. Bruny Island if you want coastline and food, Port Arthur if you want the history.
Three days — the one to aim for
- Bruny Island, ferry included both ways, pick-up from about 6:50am.
- Port Arthur and the Tasman Peninsula.
- Hobart and Mount Wellington, which is the gentlest day and the cheapest at $137.
- That is the whole south of the island covered, from one bed.
Five days or more
- Add Wineglass Bay and Freycinet on the east coast.
- Add Cradle Mountain, which does from Hobart as a 6am start in an 11-seat bus.
- Add Maria Island or the Tahune Airwalk if you would rather go somewhere most visitors do not.
- At this point a multi-day loop is usually better value than stacking day trips — it stops you driving the same road out and back each morning.
