Things to do in Hobart
City, then the islandsSalamanca and the mountain in town, then Port Arthur and Bruny Island by day.
Walk Salamanca and the waterfront, go up Mount Wellington, then spend your days out of town. Salamanca Market runs on Saturdays, and the waterfront, Salamanca and the city are close enough to walk. The best things to do are a day away: Port Arthur, the convict settlement with its buildings still standing, about 90 minutes from Hobart; Bruny Island, with the ferry included both ways; and Maria Island, a car-free national park full of wombats. Every day trip collects you from your accommodation, from $137 for the Hobart Highlights day.

Hobart is a small harbour city, and it is the best base in Tasmania for days out: nearly everything people come to the south of the island for is a day trip from it, with pick-up from where you sleep. So the list splits in two, the city itself and the days out.

- Salamanca Market on Saturdaysthe one thing in Hobart you do not need a trip for.
- The waterfront and Salamancaa short walk from the city centre. Hobart is easy to see on foot.

Hobart averages 21.8°C by day in January and February and 11.8°C in July, and its rain is spread through the year, with October the wettest month at 62mm. Summer is the long days; winter is the quietest time in Tasmania, and the warm bus does the work between the stops. For how to fit these into a stay, see our how many days in Hobart page.
