Is Cradle Mountain worth visiting in winter?

YesSnow on the tops, and the park nearly to yourself.

Yes, if you want to see it in snow. Winter is when Cradle Mountain looks most like itself: snow on the tops, and the quietest and best-value time of year in Tasmania. It is cold. The highlands average 6°C by day in July and about -2°C at night, and August is the wettest month at 122mm. But the walk most people come for, the Dove Lake circuit, is about 6km, flat and mostly boardwalk, and it works in any weather. A day trip from Launceston is from $169.

Most people plan Cradle Mountain for summer. The ones who go in winter see it under snow with the park nearly to themselves, and almost nobody plans for it while everybody who does raves about it.

What winter gives you

  • The mountain in snow.Minimums sit below freezing from May to September, and snow on the tops is what turns the postcard into something else.
  • The quietest and best-value time of yearto be in Tasmania.
  • Wildlife is easier to seein poor weather than in bright sun. Wombats are easy to find around Ronny Creek.
  • Cloud on the mountain is part of the look. The Dove Lake boardwalk is beautiful in mist.

What still works when the weather turns

  • The Dove Lake circuitabout 6km, flat and mostly boardwalk, with the mountain above you the whole way. Around two hours.
  • Short, sheltered rainforest walksat Weindorfers Forest and Pencil Pine Falls.
  • A second dayif you can give it one. Cloud sits on the mountain often, and a second morning is a second chance at the view.
  • Pack for the highlands, not for Hobart.Hobart averages about 12°C in winter; up here it is half that by day and below freezing at night.

Which one in winter

  • From Launcestonthe day trip at $169 is the shortest drive and the cheapest way in.
  • From Hobart in a daythe $260 trip gives you up to five hours in the park, with park entry and the shuttle bus included.
  • The 2 day trip from Hobartis the one we would pick in winter: a night in a motel near the park means an evening and a morning at the mountain, so one cloudy afternoon does not decide the trip.
  • Cradle and Wineglass Bay in two dayspairs Tasmania's two famous views. It runs on Wednesdays.
