Is Bruny Island worth visiting in winter?

YesThe food is indoors and the island is empty.

Yes, and it is one of the better winter days in Tasmania. Hobart averages 12°C in June and July with around 54mm of rain a month — which is less than October gets. The rain is spread rather than heavy, so you get showers and clearing rather than washouts. Bruny's draw is its food — cheese, oysters, fudge, chocolate, whisky — and all of that is indoors. The ferry runs year round, the day trips run year round, and the island is empty.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

Tasmania in winter gets written off, and Bruny is the clearest case against that. Most of what you go there for does not care what the weather is doing.

What still works in winter

  • All the food. The cheese, the oysters, the fudge, the chocolate, the honey and the whisky are all indoors and all open.
  • The ferry runs year roundfrom Kettering, and the day trips with it.
  • The Neck lookoutis a short climb and the view does not change.
  • Cape Bruny lighthouseis as good in a grey sky as a blue one — arguably better.
  • Wildlife is easier to see.Less heat means more movement during the day.
  • You will have it to yourself. In summer the ferry queue is an hour; in July it is not.

What to expect

  • Short days.It is dark by about five in midwinter, so a day trip starting at 6:50am is making the most of the light.
  • Wind off the Southern Ocean. It is 12°C on paper and colder standing at the Neck. A windproof layer matters more than a thick one.
  • Showers and clearingrather than all-day rain, most of the time.
  • Snow on the mountains inlandwhich is part of why Tasmania in winter is worth seeing at all.

The day trips, running year round

TripWhat is includedEffortGroupFrom
1 Day Bruny Island TourNo meals included. Lunch is at the Bruny Island Hotel, a cafe or a winery at your own cost, and the produce tastings are also at your own cost.—Small group, max 20$175
1 Day Bruny Island Food & Wine TourLunch at Adventure Bay is included — oysters, a main and two drinks. Tastings through the day cover cheese and beer, fudge, chocolate and honey ice cream.—Small group, max 24$259

Effort is rated 2 out of 5 on both — this is a gentle day whatever the month.

In winter the food and wine day is the one we would take. Lunch at Adventure Bay is included — oysters, a main and two drinks — plus tastings through the day, so you are indoors and eating at the point when a grey afternoon would otherwise drag.

What to swap in winter

Bruny keeps. What suffers in a Tasmanian winter is the long exposed walking — Cradle Mountain in July averages 6°C with snow on the tops, which is beautiful but a different undertaking. There is more on that on our best time to visit Cradle Mountain page.
