Can you visit Cairns without a car?
Yes, easilyThe reef boats leave from the esplanade, and the rainforest days pick you up.
Yes, and most visitors do. The reef boats leave from the Reef Fleet Terminal on the Cairns esplanade, in town: the snorkel day checks in at 7:30am, and the luxury reef boat runs coaches back to your accommodation at 4:55pm. The rainforest and outback days come to you: the Cape Tribulation day in a 4WD and the Chillagoe caves day both pick up and drop off at your Cairns accommodation, and the two day Tablelands and Daintree trip also collects from the Northern Beaches and Port Douglas. Reef days are from $215, the Daintree from $224 and the Atherton Tablelands from $175.
Checked on 28 October 2026.
Cairns is the rare holiday town where a car does nothing for the things you came for. The reef is a boat ride, and the boats leave from the waterfront in town. The Daintree, the Atherton Tablelands and the outback at Chillagoe are full days with a guide, in a vehicle built for the roads, and they start at your door. The airport is in town too, so you lose no time at either end.

The two day Tablelands, Daintree and Cape Tribulation trip, $445, picks up in Cairns between 7:15 and 7:45am on day one, and on day two also collects from the Northern Beaches at 7:45am and Port Douglas at 8:45am. In town, on foot
The lagoon on the esplanade is free and open year round, and it is where Cairns swims, since there is no swimming beach in town. It sits on the same waterfront as the Reef Fleet Terminal, so your reef morning starts where your evenings do. For how to fit the days together, our three days in Cairns page sets it out day by day.
Carrying on down the coast
You do not need a car after Cairns either. The 7 day Cairns to Brisbane trip, $1,449, has the bus passes between the towns booked for you before you travel, with hostel nights in central Cairns, Airlie Beach and Rainbow Beach, and a reef day, a Whitsundays sail and K'gari included, each running its own boat or 4WD. The 10 day version, $1,999, adds a night aboard the sailing boat and two nights camping on K'gari.
