What is there to do in Cairns in three days?

Reef, rainforest, then one of your own choosing. Three days is exactly the right amount of time for Cairns, because the two big things sit on opposite sides of town and each takes a full day. Day one the Great Barrier Reef — a boat to the outer reef with around five hours in the water, from $215. Day two the Daintree and Cape Tribulation, the oldest rainforest on earth, from $224. Day three the Atherton Tablelands and its waterfalls from $175, the Chillagoe caves, or an Aboriginal-guided day on the coast.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

Cairns is one of the few places in Australia where three days genuinely is enough, and that is because almost everything worth doing is a day trip that picks you up and drops you back.

Day one — the Great Barrier Reef

The boats leave in the morning and are back late afternoon. All of these reach the outer reef, which is the part worth the trip. What you are choosing between is the boat and how many people are on it.

Day two — the Daintree and Cape Tribulation

North of Cairns the rainforest runs right down to the sea. It is the only place on earth where two World Heritage sites meet, and it is a straightforward day out with the ferry across the Daintree River included.

Day three — pick one

The Tablelands day is the gentler one — waterfalls, swimming holes and a coffee plantation. Chillagoe is the long drive west into proper outback, with a ranger-guided walk through the caves.

Every one of these picks up from Cairns accommodation and drops you back, so three days needs no car and no planning beyond which day is which. Full prices for every Cairns day trip are on our what a day from Cairns costs page.
