Cairns or Port Douglas — where should you base yourself?

Cairns, for almost everyone. It is where the reef boats leave from, where the rainforest day trips start, and where the airport is. Port Douglas is the prettier town and it is closer to the Daintree, but basing there means paying a transfer to get back to the boats every morning. Port Douglas is an hour north of Cairns, and several of our trips pick up there anyway — the 2 day Tablelands and Daintree collects from Port Douglas at 8:45am on day two. Reef days from Cairns start at $215, rainforest days at $224.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

Both sit on the same stretch of coast with the reef offshore and the rainforest behind. The difference is not what you can see — it is how much of your morning you spend getting to it.

Why Cairns wins for most people

  • Everything departs from there. The reef boats, the rainforest trips, the Tablelands, Chillagoe — all of them pick up from Cairns accommodation and drop you back.
  • You do not need a car.Not one of these trips requires you to drive anywhere.
  • The airport is in townso you lose no time at either end.
  • It is the start of the east coast runif a few days turns into a few weeks.

When Port Douglas is the right answer

  • You are there to relax rather than to do things.Four Mile Beach is the better beach and the town is far quieter.
  • The Daintree is your priorityand the reef is secondary — you are 45 minutes closer to the ferry.
  • You have a hire carand the transfers do not matter to you.
  • You are staying a week or moreso one or two transfers back to Cairns are neither here nor there.

Staying in both

It works, and it is a common shape: a few days in Cairns for the reef and the Tablelands, then two nights in Port Douglas for the Daintree and the beach. You only move once, and you finish somewhere quiet. There is a day-by-day version on our three days in Cairns page, and the either/or on the two rainforest days is on Tablelands or Daintree.
