Which Great Barrier Reef tour should you pick from Cairns?
All outer reefSo choose on the boat and the crowd, not the reef.
Every one of them reaches the outer reef, so stop comparing the reef and compare the boat. The real differences are how many people are aboard: from 20 on a sailing catamaran to 160 on a big dive vessel — how many sites you visit, and how long you are in the water. The most time in the water is around five hours across two outer reef sites, $239. The quietest boat is the sailing catamaran at $215, capped at 20. The most sites is three, on a dive vessel at $310.
Checked on 6 October 2026.
This is the most-asked question about Cairns and most answers to it compare the wrong thing. The reef is the same reef. All of these go to the outer reef, which is the part worth the trip, and what you are choosing is the day you have getting there and back.
The four, side by side
| Trip | Where it goes | People | Comfort | From |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Day Reef Sailing & Snorkel Tour | — | Max 20 | — | $215 |
| 1 Day Snorkel Adventure | — | 10 to 160 | — | $239 |
| 1 Day Luxury Reef Experience | — | Max 50 | — | $310 |
| 3 Day Reef & Rainforest Highlights | — | Max 16 | — | $600 |
Comfort is rated 1 to 5 on the trip's own page. All four reach the outer reef.
What separates them
- Number of people.20 on the sailing catamaran, up to 50 on Silverswift, 10 to 160 on the big dive vessel. This is the biggest difference in how the day feels and almost nobody compares it.
- Time in the water. The $239 trip gives you around five hours across two sites, which is the most of any of them.
- Number of sites. Two on most, three on the $310 trip. Flynn, Pellowe, Milln or Thetford, chosen on the day for conditions.
- The boat itself.A sailing catamaran with bow nets is a different day from a 35 metre high-speed dive vessel with air-conditioned lounges.
- Diving. The dive vessels carry gear and run introductory dives; the sailing boat is a snorkel trip.
Which we would pick
| If you want | Take | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The quietest boat | Sailing catamaran, $215 | Owner operated, capped at 20, bow nets to lie in between sites. The cheapest and the calmest |
| Most time snorkelling | Snorkel Adventure, $239 | Around five hours in the water. No other trip here gives you that |
| To dive, or three sites | Silverswift, $310 | Three outer reef sites, max 50, comfort 5, licensed bar and a light breakfast on boarding |
| Reef and rainforest together | 3 day package, $600 | A superyacht on day one, the Daintree on days two and three. Max 16. You book your own nights |
| Children aboard | $239 or $310 | Bigger, steadier vessels with shade, lounges and somewhere to sit out of the sun |
Things worth checking before you book
- It is about an hour and a half out to the reefon the fast boats, longer under sail. If you are a poor sailor, take that into account — the sailing catamaran is the gentler ride but the slower one.
- Stinger suits are carriedroughly November to May, when marine stingers are present on the Queensland coast.
- Everything leaves from the Reef Fleet Terminalon the Cairns esplanade, except the sailing trips.
- Lunch is included on all of them. The dive vessels do a buffet; the sailing boat does a tropical spread with a glass of wine.
- Book the reef early in your stay.If the weather turns you want a spare day to move it to.
Cairns or somewhere else for the reef?
If you are still choosing a town rather than a boat, there are two other pages worth reading: Cairns or the Whitsundays for the Great Barrier Reef, and Cairns or Port Douglas. Cairns is where the boats leave from.
