Things to do in Broome

Beach, then the KimberleyCable Beach at sunset in town, and the Kimberley on the trips that start here.

Watch the sun set over Cable Beach, find the dinosaur footprints at Gantheaume Point, catch the Staircase to the Moon, and walk the old pearling town. Cable Beach is 22km of white sand facing west, with the camel trains along it at sunset. The footprints are in the reef rock at Gantheaume Point, visible at very low tide, and the Staircase to the Moon is the full moon rising over the mudflats of Roebuck Bay, on particular nights between March and October. Broome is also where the Kimberley crossings start: ten days to Darwin, with a guided walk 750 metres into Tunnel Creek, from $3,195.

Checked on 28 October 2026.

Broome is a town of about 15,000 people on the far north-west coast, 2,200km from Perth and 1,900km from Darwin. It was the pearl capital of the world, it has one of the great beaches in the country, and it is the starting line for the Kimberley.

In town

  • Cable Beach.Twenty-two kilometres of white sand facing west, so the sun sets straight into the Indian Ocean every evening. The camel trains along it at sunset are the photograph everybody takes.
  • Gantheaume Point.Dinosaur footprints in the reef rock, visible at very low tide.
  • The Staircase to the Moon. The rising full moon reflecting off the mudflats at Roebuck Bay, on particular nights between March and October.
  • Chinatown and the pearling historythe reason the town exists at all, including the Japanese and Chinese cemeteries from the diving era.
  • Cape Levequea few hours north on the Dampier Peninsula, if you want a long day out.
