Can you visit Karijini or the Kimberley as a day trip from Broome?
NoKarijini is a two-day drive. The Kimberley is a nine-day trip.
No to both, and it is not close. Broome sits on its own in the far north-west, and the two things people ask about reaching from it are the furthest things from it. Karijini is deep in the Pilbara — we sell it as part of a ten day trip out of Perth, not as a day out of anywhere. The Kimberley and the Gibb River Road take nine to ten days from Broome to Darwin. What Broome genuinely has is its own: Cable Beach, the Staircase to the Moon and the dinosaur footprints at Gantheaume Point.

Broome looks like a base on a map. It is really a destination with a very long way between it and everything else, and the distances in this corner of the country do not behave like distances anywhere else.
What people ask about, and how long it really takes
| Where | From Broome | How we actually sell it |
|---|---|---|
| Karijini | A two-day drive south into the Pilbara | Part of a 10 day trip out of Perth — West Coast and Karijini |
| The Gibb River Road | It starts near Derby, but it is 600km of unsealed road | 9 or 10 days across to Darwin — Kimberley trips |
| Purnululu (Bungle Bungles) | Right across the Kimberley | Included on the 10 day Darwin crossings |
| Cape Leveque | A few hours north on the Dampier Peninsula | The only one that is plausibly a long day |
| Perth | A 10 day trip down the coast | Broome to Perth — 10 days |
What Broome itself has
- Cable Beach22km of sand, and the camel trains along it at sunset are the photograph everybody takes.
- Gantheaume Pointdinosaur footprints in the reef rock, visible at very low tide.
- The Staircase to the Moonthe full moon rising over the mudflats at Roebuck Bay, on a handful of nights between roughly March and October.
- Chinatown and the pearling historywhich is why the town exists at all.

All of these are dry season only, roughly May to September. The Gibb River Road floods and closes in the wet.
If you only have a day or two in Broome
Take it as a rest rather than a base. Broome is where the long trips start and finish, and the 24 day Perth to Darwin run deliberately builds in four free days here with no meals included, because people need them. Cable Beach, a swim, and a sunset is a perfectly good use of two days after a week of camping.
When to come
May to September. That is the dry season and it is when every trip through the Kimberley runs. Outside it the roads close, the humidity is serious, and the crossings simply are not available. There is more on what the crossings cost and include on our what does a Kimberley trip cost page.
Where this comes from. Trip lengths, start and finish points, free days and prices are each trip's own details as held on its page here, and prices update on their own. Gibb River Road conditions and seasonal closures are the published road status for the Kimberley.
