Is Broome worth visiting?
Yes, and mainly as the gateway to the Kimberley. Broome itself has 22km of Cable Beach, camels at sunset and a pearling history worth a day. The reason to get there is what starts from it: the Kimberley, which is the remotest trip we sell, from $2,699.

Broome is a town of about 15,000 people, 2,200km from Perth and 1,900km from Darwin. Getting there is a commitment. It earns it as a base for the Kimberley, and it is a genuinely odd and likeable place in its own right.
Why it is worth going
- Cable Beach.Twenty-two kilometres of white sand facing west, which means the sun sets straight into the Indian Ocean every evening.
- It is the gateway to the Kimberleygorges, waterfalls and country three times the size of England with forty thousand people in it.
- The pearling history.Broome was the pearl capital of the world and the town still shows it, including Japanese and Chinese cemeteries from the diving era.
- Staircase to the MoonMarch to October — the rising full moon reflecting off the mudflats at Roebuck Bay, which happens on specific nights.
- Dinosaur footprintsin the rock at Gantheaume Point, visible at very low tide.
The honest version
- The town needs a day or two.The Kimberley needs nine or ten.
- The season is not negotiable.The Kimberley trips run May to September; outside that the unsealed roads close. The figures.
- It is expensive to reach.Flights into Broome cost real money and the overland trips are ten days.
- Not a first Australian trip.If you have a fortnight and have never been, the east coast or the Red Centre gives you more. Broome is what you come back for.
