What is a Kimberley trip like, and how do you get to Broome?

It is the remotest trip we sell and the one people rate highest. Broome connects to Darwin in 9 or 10 days and to Perth in 10, through gorge country almost nobody reaches. From $2,699. Everything is included because there is nothing out there to buy.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

The Kimberley is the top left corner of Australia — an area three times the size of England with about forty thousand people in it. There is no way to see it on a short trip and no way to see it without a 4WD, which is why these are the longest and most expensive trips we sell, and why people come back saying it was the best thing they did.

Which direction?

  • Darwin to Broome, or Broome to Darwin — 9 or 10 days across the Kimberley proper. This is the one people mean when they say the Kimberley.
  • Perth to Broome, or Broome to Perth — 10 days up or down the west coast and across the Pilbara, taking in Karijini National Park.
  • Either way you fly one end. These are one-way trips by design, because doubling back across that country would waste a week.

What the days are like

  • Long drives on unsealed road. The operators' own sheets put most days around 500km, and the surface is the reason it takes all day.
  • Gorges and waterholes — Karijini on the Perth runs, and the Kimberley gorges on the Darwin ones. Swimming is a large part of why you are there.
  • Camping with facilities, hostels and station stays, depending on the night and the trip.
  • Everything is included because there is nowhere to buy anything. That is why the headline price looks high next to a three-day trip.

Who it suits

  • People with time. Nine days is the minimum and there is no short version.
  • People who like the driving. If long days in a vehicle through empty country sound like the point rather than the price, this is your trip.
  • Not a first Australian trip. If you have a fortnight and have never been, the east coast or the Red Centre will give you more. The Kimberley is what you come back for.

Getting to Broome

Broome is a long way from everywhere — the nearest capital is Darwin, about 1,900km by road. Most people fly in or out of one end and take a trip the other way, which is how these are built.
