Tasmania itinerary — 5, 6 or 7 days, day by day

Five days does the loop — Hobart, the wild west coast, Cradle Mountain, Launceston and Freycinet, back to Hobart. Seven days adds the Tasman Peninsula and Port Arthur without rushing anything. Three days covers the south if that is all you have. Here is each one, day by day.

Checked on 5 October 2026.

Tasmania is small enough to loop and big enough that the loop takes real time. The roads are slow and lovely, so the honest planning question is how many of the five big places you can reach without spending the week in the car. These itineraries run as written.

5 days — the full loop

Day by day

  • Day 1 — Hobart west to Strahan, through the highlands and the old mining country.
  • Day 2 — the wild west coast, rainforest and the Gordon River country.
  • Day 3 — Cradle Mountain, then across to Launceston.
  • Day 4 — Launceston down to Bicheno on the east coast.
  • Day 5 — Freycinet National Park and Wineglass Bay, back to Hobart.

Five days is the shortest trip that reaches both the west coast and the east, which is what makes Tasmania worth the flight. Nights are in cabins and motels rather than tents.

7 days — the loop plus the south

Day by day

  • Days 1 to 5 — exactly as above: Strahan, the west coast, Cradle Mountain, Launceston, Freycinet.
  • Day 6 — Tasmanian devils, Richmond and Wellington Park above Hobart.
  • Day 7 — the Tasman Peninsula and Port Arthur.

Seven is the length to pick if you want Port Arthur as well as Cradle Mountain. Those two sit at opposite ends of the island, and a five-day trip has to choose.

3 days — the south, from Hobart

Day by day

  • Day 1 — Bruny Island, ferry included, a full day of coastline and food producers.
  • Day 2 — Hobart highlights and Mount Wellington.
  • Day 3 — Port Arthur and the Tasman Peninsula.

Picking a length

  • Three days if Tasmania is a side trip — you will see the south properly and leave wanting the rest.
  • Five days is the sweet spot. The whole loop, both coasts and Cradle Mountain.
  • Six or seven days adds Port Arthur and a slower pace, which is what most people say they wish they had done.
  • Ten days reaches the corners — the Tarkine, the far north east and the parts that never make a list.
  • Check what is included. The short Hobart-based trips run as day trips from town, so your nights are your own; the five, seven and ten day loops include every night.
