Is Australia good for solo travel, and which tours suit going alone?
It is one of the easiest countries to travel alone, because the trips are built for it. Groups cap at 16 to 24 on nearly everything, and on the camping trips there is no single supplement — everyone is in a swag or a shared tent, so you are not paying extra for travelling by yourself.
Checked on 6 October 2026.
The worry is always the same: will I be the only one on my own. On these trips you will not be — small-group outback and east coast travel is where people go precisely because they are travelling alone, and three days round a campfire does the rest.
Why it works here
- No single supplement on the camping trips. Everyone sleeps in a swag or a shared tent, so there is no room to pay a surcharge on. That is a real saving against any hotel-based trip.
- Small groups. Most trips cap at 20, 21 or 24 — a van of people rather than a coach of strangers. A few of the Whitsunday boats go down to 10 to 14.
- The days are shared by design. Shared cooking, shared campfire, the same sunrise. People swap plans by the second night.
- Transport and beds are arranged, so you are not navigating an unfamiliar country alone with a timetable.
Check the age band before you book
This is the one thing that catches solo travellers out, because it is not about whether you are alone — it is about how old you are. The bands on our trips are the operators' own:
- 18 to 35 only — five trips, mostly the Whitsunday sailing boats. A party crowd and a hard limit.
- 18 to 39 — twelve trips, the biggest single band.
- 18+, most travellers 18 to 35 — six trips, so the feel is young but the door is open.
- No upper age limit, most travellers 20 to 50 — ten trips, and the best bet if you are over 40 and travelling alone.
- All ages on most of the day trips.
- If the band is not on the trip page, ask — we will check it against the operator rather than guess.

If you would rather not share a room
- Several trips offer a private upgrade — the K'gari resort trips have private twin and queen rooms, and the Whitsunday boats have private cabins on some vessels.
- The Great Ocean Road and Grampians trips use motels with private ensuite rooms as standard.
- The Safari range at Uluru sleeps in permanent tents with twin beds rather than swags on the ground.
- Ask when you book and we will tell you what a private room adds on that specific trip.
