What is there to see on the Nullarbor?

Cliffs, whales, skyThe Bunda Cliffs, the whales at the Head of Bight, and a night out on the plain itself.

The Bunda Cliffs, the whales at the Head of Bight, the longest straight road in Australia, and a sky with no light anywhere near it. The Bunda Cliffs are a 100km wall of limestone where the plain drops into the Southern Ocean. From June to October southern right whales calve at the Head of Bight, close enough to the cliffs to watch from land. The road carries a 146km straight, and on our crossings night four is bush camping on the plain itself. Either side is the coast, with two nights at Lucky Bay. Ten days with a guide, from $2,219 Perth to Adelaide or from $2,450 Adelaide to Perth.

Checked on 28 October 2026.

The Nullarbor is the largest single piece of limestone on earth, about 200,000 square kilometres between Western Australia and South Australia, and the name means no trees. The emptiness is the sight. What breaks it up is spectacular, and it comes in a handful of places.

On the plain

  • The Bunda Cliffs. The Southern Ocean meets the plain in a 100km wall of limestone, with nothing between you and Antarctica.
  • The whales at the Head of BightJune to October, when southern right whales calve close enough to the cliffs to watch from land.
  • The 146km straightthe longest straight stretch of road in Australia.
  • The roadhouses, hundreds of kilometres apart, the only settlements on the plain.
  • The night sky.Night four on both crossings is bush camping on the Nullarbor, with no light anywhere near you.

Either side of it

The plain takes a day or two of the drive. The rest of the ten days goes on the coast at each end, where a lot of the best sights are.

Seeing it with a guide

Perth to Adelaide is about 2,700km. On a crossing the guide does all of it in an air-conditioned 4WD mini bus, with a group of 21 at most, and the stops, the camps and most meals are arranged. Both run one way, so you fly into one end and out of the other.
