How do you cross the Nullarbor, and is it worth doing?
Ten days by road, in either direction, from $2,219. The Nullarbor is a limestone plain the size of a small country with almost nothing on it — and that emptiness is the reason to do it. The crossing runs Perth to Adelaide or Adelaide to Perth, with everything arranged.
Checked on 6 October 2026.
The Nullarbor is the largest single piece of limestone on earth, about 200,000 square kilometres of it, and the name means no trees. The road across it includes the longest straight stretch in Australia at 146km. People either think that sounds like nothing or like the whole point, and both are fair.
What is actually out there
- The Bunda Cliffsthe Southern Ocean meeting the plain in a 100km wall of limestone, with nothing between you and Antarctica.
- Whales at the Head of Bightroughly June to October, when southern right whales calve close enough to the cliffs to watch from land.
- Roadhouses and nothing else. The settlements are hundreds of kilometres apart and most exist only to sell fuel.
- Night skiesof a kind very few people have seen, because there is no light anywhere near.
- The sense of the distance. This is the part nobody can photograph and everybody talks about afterwards.

The honest version
- It is a lot of drivingby design. If long days in a vehicle through empty country sound like the price rather than the point, this is not your trip.
- There is no short version. The distance between Perth and Adelaide is about 2,700km and nothing changes that.
- Everything is includedbecause there is almost nowhere to buy anything — that is why the price looks high next to a three-day trip and works out lower per day.
- Winter is the time for whalesJune to October at the Head of Bight. Summer is very hot and the plain is unforgiving.
Doing it one way
Both trips are one-way by design — you fly into one end and out of the other. That is the sensible way to use ten days rather than spending twenty on a round trip.
