Margaret River is about three hours south of Perth, in the south-west corner of Western Australia. What there is to do falls into two halves: the food and wine, which is why most people come, and the coast and forest around it, which is why they come back.

- The caves.Limestone caves run the length of the ridge between the capes. Jewel, Lake and Mammoth are the ones usually open.
- The karri forestinland, where the trees run to 60 metres and you can climb a fire lookout up one.

Margaret River averages 27°C in January with 12mm of rain, and 16°C in July. Summer is beach weather; winter is when the caves and the cellar doors come into their own, with the karri forest at its greenest and the region to yourself.
