The Gibb, the gorges, the BunglesNine or ten days between Broome and Darwin, with every night out there included.

Drive the Gibb River Road, camp beside the gorges, and sleep at Purnululu under the Bungle Bungles. The Kimberley crossings run 600km of the Gibb River Road in a 4WD, ford the Pentecost River, walk 750 metres into the cave system at Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek), and camp at Manning Gorge, Bell Gorge, El Questro Station and Purnululu. One trip spends a night on a secluded island in Lake Argyle. Every night out there and the meals are included, from $2,699 for nine days, Darwin to Broome.

Checked on 28 October 2026.

The Kimberley is the top left corner of Australia, an area three times the size of England with about forty thousand people in it. What there is to do is the country itself: the road, the gorges, the rivers and the rock. You see it on a crossing between Broome and Darwin, nine or ten days in a 4WD, with the camps already chosen.

The road and the rivers

  • The Gibb River Road.600km of it on the crossings, in a 4WD built for it, with a guide driving. This is the road people mean when they talk about the Kimberley.
  • River crossingsincluding the Pentecost River.
  • The Ord Riverwith camps at exclusive sites on its banks on the 10 day crossings.
  • A night on a secluded island in Lake Argyleon the 9 day Darwin to Broome trip.
  • The Victoria Rivera bush camp on the way west from Darwin.

The gorges and the rock

  • Purnululu, the Bungle Bungles. All three Darwin and Broome crossings camp here: two nights on the 10 day Darwin to Broome, and the off-road drive in on the 9 day trip. The camp is bush, with no showers, which is part of being out there.
  • Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek).A guided walk 750 metres into the cave system, on the Broome to Darwin run.
  • Manning Gorge and Bell Gorge.Bush camps beside both on the 9 day trip, and Manning Gorge on the 10 day Darwin to Broome. Swimming in the gorges is a large part of why you are there.
  • El Questro Stationa camp with facilities, and Mount Barnett Station on the Gibb.
  • From the airas an extra: scenic flights over the Bungle Bungles and the Horizontal Falls. People are glad they paid for both.

At either end

  • Broomeat the western end: Cable Beach, the camels at sunset and the Staircase to the Moon. More on our things to do in Broome page.
  • Nitmiluk and Katherine Gorgeor a swim at Edith Falls, on the Darwin end of the 10 day crossings.
  • The Magnetic Termite Moundsthe first stop out of Darwin on the 9 day trip.

When to go

May to September, the dry. Kununurra averages 31°C by day and 15°C at night in July, and August averages 0.1mm of rain, so the Gibb is open, the gorges are swimmable and the camping nights are cool. The wet brings 216mm in January, the waterfalls at their fullest and the roads closed, so the crossings run in the dry. There is more month by month on our best time to visit Broome and the Kimberley page.
