What does a Kimberley trip cost?

From $2,699Nine days, every meal, and the Gibb River Road.

From $2,699 for nine days, and that is close to everything. The Kimberley is the most expensive region in Australia to travel, and the reason is simple: there is nothing out there. No towns, no fuel for hundreds of kilometres, no shops. So the price carries every meal, the camping gear, the park fees, a 4WD built for the Gibb River Road and a guide — around $300 a day all in. The 10 day crossings run $2,805 to $3,195 depending on direction.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

The Kimberley prices look high next to the east coast until you see what is in them — and until you price up doing it yourself, which is where most people change their minds.

What the price covers

  • Every meal. The Darwin to Broome run includes 9 breakfasts, 10 lunches and 9 dinners — you are not buying food out there because there is nowhere to buy it.
  • Nine nights' accommodationcamping in tents with swags at private and exclusive sites.
  • The camping gearso you are not carrying a tent across the country.
  • National park feesincluding Purnululu.
  • A 4WD built for itplus a guide, across 600km of the Gibb River Road and river crossings including the Pentecost.

What it does not cover

  • Scenic flights. The Bungle Bungles from the air and the Horizontal Falls are both extra, and both are the sort of thing people are glad they paid for.
  • A shower on the Purnululu nights. Most camps have facilities; the two nights at Purnululu do not.
  • Drinksand anything bought at the stations you pass through.
  • Getting to Darwin or Broomewhich for most people is a flight.

Why not just drive it?

People do, and it is a serious undertaking rather than a cheaper one. The Gibb River Road is 600km of unsealed road with river crossings, and standard hire agreements will not cover you on it — so you are hiring a properly equipped 4WD at a properly equipped price, carrying your own fuel, water and recovery gear, and the road closes in the wet. There is a fuller answer on our do you need a 4WD page.

The cheapest honest option

The 9 day Darwin to Broome at $2,699. It is one day shorter than the classic crossing rather than a thinner version of it, and it still runs the Gibb. If the budget will not stretch, the better saving is to take the Broome to Perth run instead — ten days down the west coast at $2,805, which is a different trip but a very good one.

When it runs

The dry season only, roughly May to September. The Gibb River Road floods and closes in the wet, so these trips simply do not run outside those months. If your dates fall in the wet, the Top End around Darwin is still open and at its most spectacular.
