Is Kakadu worth visiting?

Yes, with three days. In one day, go to Litchfield instead. Kakadu is half the size of Switzerland, with rock art galleries that are tens of thousands of years old and wetlands full of crocodiles. A day trip is 615km of driving to see a fraction of it.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

Kakadu is the biggest national park in Australia and the one most people have heard of. It is also the one most often done badly — as a long day out of Darwin that is mostly road. Given three days it is extraordinary; given one it is a drive.

Why it is worth going

  • The rock art.Ubirr and Nourlangie hold some of the best-preserved galleries anywhere in the world, painted over tens of thousands of years. They are still culturally live, not museum pieces.
  • It is dual World Heritage listedfor its nature and for its culture — which fewer than forty places on earth are.
  • The wetlands.A boat cruise on Corroboree Billabong or the Mary River puts you among saltwater crocodiles and some of the densest birdlife in Australia.
  • The gorges.Jim Jim and Twin Falls in the dry, reached on the longer trips, and country that feels genuinely remote.
  • It is Aboriginal landjointly managed with the traditional owners, and the guiding reflects that.

The honest version

  • One day is 615km of drivingto see Ubirr and little else. It is a long day on the road and the park barely opens up.
  • Three days is where it worksthe gorges and the rock art both fit, and you are not watching the clock.
  • Litchfield is the better single dayfrom Darwin: closer, with waterfalls you can swim under. The two compared.
  • The season decides a lot.In the wet, some tracks close; in the dry, everything is open. Month by month.
