Things to do on Bruny Island

Look, then eatThe Neck and the lighthouse in the morning, the island's producers in the afternoon.

Climb to the Neck lookout, drive to Cape Bruny lighthouse, walk the beaches, then eat your way back. Bruny is two islands joined by a narrow sand isthmus, and the Neck lookout shows both coasts at once. Cape Bruny lighthouse, one of the oldest in the country, is at the southern end. The other half of the day is the food: oysters, cheese and beer, fudge, chocolate, honey ice cream and whisky. A day from Hobart with the ferry included both ways is from $175, or from $259 with lunch at Adventure Bay and the tastings included.

Checked on 28 October 2026.

Bruny Island sits off the south-east coast, forty minutes from Hobart and then a short ferry. What there is to do falls into two halves: the coastline, which is wilder than most people expect this close to a capital city, and the food, the reason many people go at all.

  • The food and wine dayif you would rather taste your way round. It picks up at 7:45am, and lunch and the tastings are in the price.
  • Both are small groupscapped at 20 and 24, in a 4WD mini bus rather than a coach.

Getting across and around

  • The ferry leaves from Ketteringaround 40 minutes south of Hobart, and the crossing takes about 20 minutes. There is no bridge.
  • There is no public transport on the islandso once you are across you need a vehicle.
  • It is around 100km from the ferry to the southern endand the road turns to gravel in places.
  • On a tour all of that is handledthe ferry both ways, and all the driving.

Good in any month

Hobart averages 22°C in January and 12°C in July, and most of what Bruny is known for is indoors: the cheese, the oysters, the fudge, the whisky. Summer gives you long days on the beaches; winter gives you the island nearly to yourself. There is more on the cold months on our Bruny Island in winter page.

Bruny as part of a longer trip

If you are spending a few days in Hobart, Bruny can be one day of a short trip that covers the rest of the south. The 2 and 3 day trips give Bruny a full day with the ferry and the park pass included, and you book your own nights in Hobart, which keeps the cost down. The 10 day trip round the whole island crosses to Bruny on day 9.
