Is Tasmania worth visiting?
Yes, and it is the easiest state to see properly. Nearly half of it is national park or World Heritage, and because it is small, everything is a day trip — Cradle Mountain, Wineglass Bay, Port Arthur and Bruny Island are all within reach of one bed. Day trips from $137, the full loop from $449.

Tasmania takes an extra flight and most people doing a short Australian trip skip it. The ones who do not tend to say it was the best part. Here is what is actually there and why the scale of it matters.
Why people go
- Cradle Mountain — alpine country, Dove Lake and the best walking in Australia outside the Alps, with boardwalks so you do not need to be a mountaineer.
- Wineglass Bay — the curve of white sand on the east coast that turns up on every list, and deserves to.
- Port Arthur — the convict settlement, and the most affecting history anywhere in the country.
- Bruny Island — a short ferry from near Hobart, and a whole day of coastline, lighthouse and food producers.
- The west coast and the Tarkine — temperate rainforest and the Gordon River, which is as wild as Australia gets.
- The food. Oysters, cheese, whisky and cool-climate wine, mostly made within an hour of where you are standing.
The thing nobody tells you
Tasmania is about the size of Ireland, so the driving is short by Australian standards. From Hobart you can reach Bruny Island, Port Arthur, Wineglass Bay, Maria Island and even Cradle Mountain and be back the same evening. Nowhere else in Australia works like that — in the Red Centre or Western Australia the nearest thing worth seeing is hundreds of kilometres away.

The honest version
- It is cooler and wetter than the mainland. Hobart averages 21.8°C in January and 11.8°C in July, and the west coast is wetter again. Pack a layer whenever you go.
- Three days is enough to be glad you came, five is enough to see both coasts, and a week is enough to stop driving past things.
- You do not need a car — every trip we sell collects you from your accommodation.
- Summer is busiest, so book earlier. April and May are the quiet secret: still mild, far fewer people, and the best light of the year.
