Is the Great Barrier Reef still worth visiting?

Yes. The reef is 2,300km long and more than 2,900 individual reefs — the damage is real and it is not uniform. The outer reef sites the day boats use from Cairns at $215 and the Whitsundays at $199 are chosen for coral cover, and the operators move when a site declines.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

This gets asked more every year and it deserves a straight answer rather than a brochure one. The reef has had repeated bleaching events and the coverage of them is accurate. It is also the largest living structure on earth, and what that means in practice is that it is not one place having one experience.

The honest position

  • It is 2,300km longand made of more than 2,900 separate reefs. A site that bleached badly and a site an hour away can look completely different.
  • Operators move. The day boats run to sites chosen on current coral cover, and they change them when one declines — it is their business to show you something worth the fare.
  • The fish do not disappear.Even on a reef with coral loss, the marine life on a good day is unlike anything most people have snorkelled.
  • Go now rather than lateris the position most marine scientists take, and it is also the honest commercial answer.
  • Nobody should pretend it is unchanged. If you snorkelled it twenty years ago you will notice. If you have never seen a coral reef, you will not stop talking about it.

Cairns or the Whitsundays?

  • Cairns for the outer reef.Further offshore, bigger coral structures, and the classic day trip.
  • The Whitsundays for fringing reef and islands.Calmer water, closer in, and you sleep on the boat.
  • Both if you are doing the east coast runthey are different experiences and most itineraries include both.
  • The dry season, May to Octoberhas clearer water, because less rain means less run-off.
