When is the best time to visit Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef?
May to October, and it is not close. Those months are dry — under 95mm a month against over 400mm in January — the days sit in the mid to high twenties, and the water is calmest for the reef. The wet runs December to March and brings the stingers with it.
Checked on 6 October 2026.
Cairns is in the tropics, so it does not really have four seasons — it has a dry and a wet, and the difference between them is enormous. February averages 437mm of rain; August averages 26mm. That one fact decides when to go.

What this means for the reef
- June to September is the best diving and snorkelling.Less rain means less run-off, which means clearer water.
- The water is warm all yearit does not drop below the mid-twenties even in winter, so you are never cold in it.
- Stinger season runs roughly November to May.Operators provide stinger suits and the reef sites are further offshore where the risk is lower, but it is why the dry season is the easy answer.
- Wind matters more than rain.A calm wet-season day is better on the water than a windy dry-season one, and your skipper decides on the morning.
And for the rainforest
- The wet season is when the Daintree is at its bestwaterfalls running, everything green, and the air thick with it.
- Cape Tribulation stays openthrough the wet; the roads are sealed to it.
- Fewer peoplebetween December and March, and the prices follow.
