Great Barrier Reef tours with kids — which suit young children?

Pick a child fareTwo reef trips have one. Two more sailing boats welcome all ages.

Start with the two reef trips that carry a child fare. In the Whitsundays, the Providence day sail picks you up from your Airlie Beach accommodation, stops for snorkelling and a picnic lunch, and takes in the Hill Inlet lookout over Whitehaven Beach: $199 for adults, $150 for children, rated 2 out of 5 for effort. From Cairns, the 3 Day Reef and Rainforest Highlights spends a day aboard a 35 metre superyacht with five hours at two outer reef sites, then two days inland to the Daintree and Chillagoe: $600, children $380, also rated 2 out of 5. For nights on the water, Mandrake and Spank Me both say all ages welcome.

Checked on 28 October 2026.

With young children the reef is less about which reef and more about the day around it: a pick-up from where you are staying, food on board, an easy effort rating and a boat that is set up for families. Here are the trips that say so on their own sheets, from Cairns and from Airlie Beach.

Other Cairns reef days

The three Cairns day boats do not publish a child fare, so ask us and we will get it for your dates. Upolu Reef, where the sailing catamaran goes, is a sheltered lagoon at the very edge of the outer reef, in a group of 20 at most. Silverswift visits three outer reef sites with a light breakfast, a buffet lunch and afternoon tea, and is rated 2 out of 5 for effort and 5 for comfort. There is more on how the three compare on which Great Barrier Reef tour to pick from Cairns.

Two boats to skip with children

  • Lady Enidis adults only: a day sail out of Airlie Beach built around a long lunch and high tea.
  • Avatartakes ages 18 to 35, a young travellers' trip.
  • If a boat you like is not on this page, ask us. The age rule is the operator's, and we will check it for that boat.

Warm whenever you go

Cairns averages 26°C by day in July and 32°C in January, and August is the driest month at 27mm. In the Whitsundays, Hamilton Island is 22°C by day in July and 30°C in January. Stinger suits are carried roughly November to May, when marine stingers are on the Queensland coast, so children can swim and snorkel through the warm months. There is a month-by-month on our Great Barrier Reef weather by month page.
