How do I get to the Great Barrier Reef?

By boat, on a day trip, from Cairns or Airlie Beach. The reef is offshore, so there is no driving to it — you book a boat. From Cairns the outer reef is about 90 minutes out, from $215; from Airlie Beach the fringing reef off the islands is closer, from $199.

The Great Barrier Reef runs 2,300km up the Queensland coast, so "getting there" really means picking which town to go out from. Two of them carry nearly all the day trips, and they give you different kinds of reef.

The two main departure points

  • Cairnsfor the outer reef. The boats run about 90 minutes offshore to the bigger coral structures. This is the classic reef day and the one most people mean.
  • Airlie Beach and the Whitsundaysfor fringing reef off the islands. Closer in, calmer water, and usually combined with a sailing trip rather than a single day out.
  • Both include hotel pick-upin their town, so you do not need a car at either end.

Getting to the departure towns

  • Cairnshas an international airport, with direct flights from the southern capitals and from Asia.
  • Airlie Beachis reached by flying to Proserpine or Hamilton Island, or overland on the east coast run.
  • Overland from Brisbane or Sydneytakes a week or two, and the packaged trips build the reef day into the itinerary with the bus passes booked before you travel.

Worth knowing

  • The skipper picks the site on the daybased on wind and current. That is a good sign rather than a bad one.
  • The dry season, May to Octoberhas clearer water because less rain means less run-off.
  • Stinger season is roughly November to May.Boats carry suits and the outer sites are lower risk.
  • You do not need to dive.Snorkelling gets you everything, and an introductory dive is an optional extra on most boats.
