Is Darwin worth visiting?

Yes, because of what is behind it. Darwin is a small tropical city with four of Australia's best national parks within a day: Litchfield's waterfalls at $179, Kakadu's rock art, Katherine Gorge, and Arnhem Land on a permit with a traditional Aboriginal guide.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

Darwin is closer to Indonesia than to Sydney and feels it. The city is small, hot and relaxed, with good markets and a waterfront. The reason to be there is the Top End behind it, which is as close as Australia gets to having everything in one place.

Why it is worth going

  • Litchfielda 450km round trip, with waterfalls and plunge pools you can swim under. The best single day in the Top End.
  • Kakadudual World Heritage listed for nature and culture, with rock art tens of thousands of years old at Ubirr.
  • Arnhem Land.Aboriginal freehold land you can visit in a day on a permit the operator holds, in a group of sixteen, with a traditional owner guiding.
  • Katherine Gorgeand a two-hour boat cruise below seventy-metre cliffs.
  • Mindil Beach marketsat sunset in the dry season, and a city that treats the heat as normal rather than an emergency.

The honest version

  • The city needs about a day.Everything else is a trip out of it.
  • The season matters more here than anywhere. In the wet, tracks close and some of the park is unreachable. The figures, month by month.
  • You cannot swim in the sea.Crocodiles and box jellyfish. The swimming is inland, in the gorges and the falls.
  • It is hot every monthbetween 30 and 33°C year round. The difference between seasons is the water, not the temperature.
