Can you visit Arnhem Land, and how do you get a permit?

Yes, in a day from Darwin, and the permit comes with the trip. Arnhem Land is Aboriginal freehold land, so you cannot simply drive in — you go with an operator who holds access, in a group capped at 16 or 17, with a traditional Aboriginal guide. From $305.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

Arnhem Land is the north-east corner of the Northern Territory, about the size of Portugal, and it is Aboriginal freehold land rather than a national park. That is the whole difference: you are a guest, not a visitor, and the trips are built around that.

The two day trips

1 Day Arnhem Land & Mikinj Valley**Minkinj Valley** — rock art beneath a towering escarpment, visited with special permissionMax 17$305
1 Day Arnhem Land & Injalak Hill **Injalak Hill** — rock art with a traditional Aboriginal guide, on unformed paths with no handrailsMax 16$345

Both leave Darwin at 5:15am, with later pick-ups at Aurora Kakadu and Jabiru. Prices update on their own.

How the permit works

  • The operator holds the access, so there is nothing for you to apply for. It is arranged as part of the trip.
  • You cannot drive in on your own without a permit from the Northern Land Council, and those are not issued for casual sightseeing.
  • Numbers are capped because the permits cap them — 16 on one trip and 17 on the other. That is why these never feel like a coach tour.
  • The guiding is the point. On the Injalak Hill trip your guide is a traditional owner, and the rock art is explained by the people whose art it is.

What the day is like

  • A 5:15am start from Darwin, with a stop at Coroboree Park Tavern, then pick-ups at Aurora Kakadu around 7:50am and Jabiru at 8:30am if you are already out that way.
  • An air-conditioned 4WD, because the roads are not sealed.
  • Injalak Hill involves unformed paths with no handrails, so it is the more demanding of the two — the Minkinj Valley trip is the gentler one.
  • It is a long day, and everyone who does it says it is the best day they had in the Top End.

Arnhem Land on a longer trip

The five-day Top End trip takes in Arnhem Land alongside Kakadu, Litchfield and Katherine, which is the way to do it if you have the days.
