Is Cradle Mountain worth it, and is four days too many?
Worth itBut four days is too many unless you are walking the Overland Track.
Worth it — but four days is too many unless you are walking the Overland Track. The thing most people come for is the Dove Lake circuit, about 6km of mostly boardwalk right under the mountain, and that is a morning. The number that matters on a day trip is the time inside the park: the Hobart day gives you up to five hours, the two-day Wineglass pairing gives you about three. One day does it, two is the insurance against cloud, and four is the Overland Track or a lot of sitting.

Cradle Mountain is Tasmania's signature view and the one place people most often over-allocate days to. Here is what each length actually gets you.
What one day buys you
- The Dove Lake circuitabout 6km, flat and mostly boardwalk, with the mountain above you the whole way. This is the postcard and it takes around two hours.
- Enys Glacial Rock and the boatshedboth on that circuit.
- A short rainforest walkat Weindorfers Forest or Pencil Pine Falls if the weather turns.
- Wombatswhich are genuinely easy to see around Ronny Creek.
The number nobody compares: hours in the park
| Trip | Starts from | Time in the park | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Day Cradle Mountain Tour | Launceston / Launceston | — | $169 |
| 1 Day Cradle Mountain Tour | Hobart / Hobart | — | $260 |
| 2 Day Cradle Mountain & Wineglass Bay Tour | Hobart / Hobart | — | $399 |
| 2 Day Cradle Mountain Tour | Hobart / Hobart | — | $435 |
Day trips from Hobart spend far longer on the road than those from Launceston, which is why the park time varies so much between them.
This is the comparison worth making. A trip that gives you five hours in the park is a different day from one that gives you three, and the price does not always tell you which is which.
Is four days too many?
- Yes, unless you are walking the Overland Trackthat is six days to Lake St Clair and a serious undertaking with booked huts.
- Two days is the sensible maximumfor most people. The second day is insurance: cloud sits on the mountain often, and a second morning is your second chance at the view.
- Climbing the summitis a steep boulder scramble and a full day, weather permitting. That justifies a second night.
- With four days in Tasmaniagive Cradle one or two and spend the rest on the east coast or the south — the island is small enough that you are not wasting the travel.
Staying a night at the mountain
The 2 day trip from Hobart includes a night in a motel near the park — a private room with private facilities, or a multi-share for two or three. That gets you an evening and a morning at the mountain rather than a few hours in the middle of the day, which in cloudy weather is the whole difference.

Cloud. The mountain is often in it, and that is the single biggest risk to a day trip. The walk still works — the Dove Lake boardwalk is beautiful in mist — but the view you came for may not appear. August is the wettest month at 122mm and July the coldest at 6°C. There is a month-by-month breakdown on our best time to visit Cradle Mountain page.
