Is Cairns worth visiting?

Yes, but not for the city itself. Cairns is a base, and it is the best-placed one in Australia: two World Heritage areas on its doorstep, the Great Barrier Reef offshore and the Daintree an hour north. A reef day is $215, rainforest $224.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

People sometimes arrive in Cairns, look at the esplanade and wonder what the fuss is. The city is small and pleasant and not the point. Everything that makes it worth the flight is within a day of it, and there is nowhere else in the country where that is true of two World Heritage areas at once.

Why it is worth going

  • The Great Barrier Reef.A full day on the water with snorkelling, and an introductory dive if you want one. It is the largest living structure on earth and no photograph prepares you.
  • The Daintree and Cape Tribulation. The oldest tropical rainforest in the world, and the only place it runs right down to a reef.
  • The Atherton Tablelandswaterfalls, crater lakes and swimming holes an hour up the range, and almost nobody goes.
  • It is set up for this.Everything collects you from your accommodation, so you do not need a car for any of it.
  • Warm water year round. The sea does not drop below the mid-twenties even in winter.

The honest version

  • Two days is the minimumone on the reef and one in the rainforest. A single day means choosing.
  • The city is not the attraction. There is no swimming beach; there is a lagoon on the esplanade instead, because of the crocodiles and the stingers.
  • Weather matters more here than most places. The dry season, May to October, is calmer and clearer on the water.
  • If the sea is updo the rainforest that day and the reef the next. Your skipper will tell you straight.

As part of a bigger trip

Cairns is one end of the east coast run. Most people arrive after a week or two coming up from Brisbane or Sydney, and the reef is the last thing they do.
