When is the best time to sail the Whitsundays?

August to October. Those months are the driest of the year — 26mm in September against 329mm in February — the water is clear, and the wind has eased from the winter trades. Stinger season runs roughly November to May, which is the other reason the dry half wins.

Checked on 6 October 2026.

Sailing weather is about three things: rain, wind and stingers. The Whitsundays have a dry season and a wet one like the rest of the tropics, and the sweet spot sits where the rain has gone and the winter trade winds have dropped off.

Wind, stingers and water

  • Winter brings the south-east tradesroughly June to August. Great if you want real sailing, less comfortable if you want flat water.
  • September and October are the calm, dry windowthe trades have dropped and the wet has not started.
  • Stinger season is roughly November to May.Boats carry stinger suits and the swimming stops are chosen with it in mind, but it is why the dry half is the simple answer.
  • The water never gets coldit sits between 17.6°C and 24.9°C overnight air temperature year round, and the sea is warmer again.

So when would we book?
